SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR A MAGNITUDE 10.0 EARTHQUAKE

*(Or Any Mega-Quake 9.0+)*

If you live near a major subduction zone (Pacific Northwest, Japan, Chile, etc.), this is your ultimate prep list. A quake this size will happen eventually—here’s how to avoid being a statistic.

PHASE 1: BEFORE THE QUAKE

1. Make Your Home Earthquake-Resistant

  • Retrofit older homes (bolt foundation, reinforce cripple walls)

  • Secure heavy furniture to studs (bookshelves, water heaters)

  • Install automatic gas shutoff valves (prevents fires)

  • Use flexible piping for water/gas lines (reduces rupture risk)

2. Build a Real Survival Kit

  • Water: 1 gallon/person/day for 6+ months (yes, months)

  • Food: Freeze-dried meals + canned goods (no power = no fridge)

  • Medicine: 6-month supply of critical prescriptions

  • Power: Solar generators + hand-crank radios

  • Cash: $5,000+ in small bills (ATMs/banks won’t work)

3. Learn Evacuation Routes

  • Tsunami zones: Know the fastest path to high ground (on foot—roads will be rubble)

  • Landslide zones: Identify safe shelters uphill

  • Rally point: Designate a meetup spot outside the disaster zone

PHASE 2: DURING THE QUAKE

1. If Indoors:

  • DROP, COVER, HOLD ON under a sturdy table

  • Stay away from windows (shattering glass kills)

  • Do NOT run outside (falling debris is deadly)

2. If Near the Coast:

  • Feel strong shaking? RUN to high ground IMMEDIATELY

  • You have MINUTES before tsunami waves hit

  • Ignore "official" warnings—they’ll be too late

3. If Driving:

  • Pull over, stop, and stay in the car (avoid bridges/overpasses)

  • Listen for tsunami sirens (abandon car and run if near coast)

PHASE 3: AFTER THE QUAKE (FIRST 30 DAYS)

1. Expect NO HELP for Weeks

  • FEMA/Red Cross will be overwhelmed

  • Police/firefighters won’t reach you (they’ll be dead or rescuing others)

2. Prevent Disease Outbreaks

  • Boil ALL water (sewage lines will rupture)

  • Bury human waste (toilet systems will fail)

  • Stockpile antibiotics (infections will spread)

3. Security & Bartering

  • Arm yourself (looters will target supplies)

  • Barter goods: Ammo, fuel, and medicine will be currency

PHASE 4: LONG-TERM RECOVERY (1+ YEAR)

  • Forget "normal" life—power grids may take decades to fully restore

  • Relocate if necessary (some cities will be abandoned)

  • Learn primitive skills (farming, hunting, manual tools)

WHERE TO LIVE TO AVOID THIS?

  • Safest zones: Central USA, Central Europe, Australia’s interior

  • Avoid: Pacific coasts, major fault lines, low-lying islands

FINAL WARNING

The Cascadia Subduction Zone (Pacific Northwest) is overdue for a 9.0+ quake. If you live there:
 Move inland if possible
Prep NOW—when it hits, it’ll be too late
